Now, on Occupied Equestria: Silver is storming the Ministry building to find a changeling bomb. Posey is making her get away from unknown hostiles after an adventure in the city. Amber is trying desperately to flee the country. All of that, and more

The skeleton is too high up in the tree for Posey to reach it.

On the ground beneath the tree but obscured from line of sight by bushes from a distance, is an equine skull inside of a royal guard style helmet, with a couple more bones scattered around. As before, the helmet is corroded and its plume is bleached. There are also one, two, three big shoes. Further away, a sword lies on the ground.

The tree trunk is a little further away and looks charred and actively shattered.

Unicorn telekinesis magic degrades at the cube root of the distance from the horn.... or something. The point is that it's a little too high up for Posey to have enough strength to dislodge it.

It seems to have been an oak tree, though its hard to say. If only Posey were a real botanist...

Oh yeah.

I forgot.

Posey suddenly freezes, a look of panic spreads across her face.
"Nobody move, the balance of Harmony is incredibly fragile here!"
Take 10 on bluff, for a modified 22

Naturally, the ponies probably flinched as soon as she said that, and at that Posey puts on a little show.
Posey casts Detect Magic, but she doesn't use any verbal or somatic components to cast the spell; instead, she defiles the areas.
Posey accumulates two defiler points, to make the spell Still and Silent.
Since this terrain is "lush" (forest), the defiling radius is relatively small, but all vegetation surrounding her in a two foot radius, from the tallest tree, to the smallest sprout, immediately crumbles into fine defiler ash.
Which, should cause this tree to disintegrate :D
"Eeep!" Posey shrieks in false alarm, as the tree beside her crumbles.

"These are the long-term consequences of vampire lairing... If balance is."
>>169814
Yes
She's mostly trying to spook the ponies, and hype her (false) specs as a necro-botanist. The tree beside her would disintegrate from the effects of her spell, but since she defiled to make the spell Silent and Still, there is that she's cast a spell at all.

Posey is doing this to put the group on high alert, and to get them to follow her closely, hoping to give her the upper hand in manipulating them.
But it also makes the skeleton easier to reach, which is a bonus.

Posey's detect magic shows:
A magical signature from the sword that has fallen on the ground.

A high signature on August

And varying levels of slight signatures on the other ponies in the group, with the unicorns having higher levels, and in general not really being out of expectations for ponies.

By and large, however, the area is non-magical

>>169815
The portions of the tree closest to Posey blacken and turn to ash. The tree crumbles, and the trunk of it starts to fall. Unfortunately, it starts to fall towards Posey. Not directly towards her - a bit off to the right, but enough that she must take evasive action, and would very likely be sincere in her expressions of fear towards the group.

The ponies grab onto their weapons and move back. There's an "Ah," an "oh no!" and an evasive maneuver as the tree comes down. They look frightened, and look towards Posey, or look around. Lights from the torches move rapidly back and forth, likely occasionally blinding Posey as they sometimes point it directly at her.

August is silent and scrunching

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention she dodges the log as it falls.
Technically defiling should cause it to disintegrate entirely into toxic defiler ash, but if it a big tree it might've been only partly.

Posey now has 2 defilers points, as by defiling nature she has also defiled herself. She now takes a -2 penalty to all Wis, Int and Cha based skill checks.

Did I fuck up with explaining her backstory? I might've omitted some stuff. Posey is a katana: a half-vampire. She was born to a vampire mother, but died as a filly; before her master acquired her corpse and transfused her in her little experiment.
Hence why she wasn't lying when she said her mother was bitten by one years ago.

Posey examines the tree, looking for any clues that might indicate the direction of the lair.

It appears to have been hit by a fireball or some other destructive spell. But it could have been mundane explosives, albeit one that was concentrated and detonated above the ground.

The direction of the lair is a bit fuzzier. The area is northwest from the river bend.

For point of reference, my understanding was that Posey was a Frankenstein monster literally grown in a vat, presumably using a miscarried/aborted/otherwise dead fetus as a base, to create a unicorn pony that was never actually a living conscious person. She was in the form of an adolescent as created and never had a childhood. This was part of a program to create the perfect undead creature, with Posey being not the end but one of many steps along the way.

"A firefight. Spells were exchanged... I don't know if this one was a mage... The lair should be further from the river. Reckless as he was, he would have instinctively maximized his proximity to running water..." Posey says, dragging her sword in that direction
"Natural" offspring, mundane parent, probably a favorite thrall.
Posey would have been slain for the first time around the time she got her cutie mark, which would've been early in horse years. Her mother would have bled her dry as it became obvious that she was immune to vampire domination, and had she had the chance to flourish, she would have become a vampire who's powers surpassed that of her mother (vampires hate that shit). After being passed off to her master, as a slaymate (a valuable undead "pet" for necromancers, created from the remains of children slain by betrayal of a parent), she would have been raised in an experiment to transfuse her with holy blood, and then would have been allowed to grow to adult age before being crucimigrated once she gained the requisite levels.

Tbh, I can roll with that story if that's what you prefer. I had to ask because Amber's player made a remark that Posey's actions in bed didn't seem consistent with her being a virgin, which is what both he and I thought. August had some cancelled dialogue about "Do you do this often?" which was never said because it was basically him telling her that he assumes she's a sloot.

It's probably not a big deal for most things, but every now and then the backstory affects some details. I'm fine with going with "she was alive once" because it seems more likely anyways."

The slaymate motif is actually why I thought to give her Gloomy as an asset for character development. I thought to make him a soulbinder, not just because I thought he'd make a cool apprentice, but because he'd also make a prime sacrifice to Orcus. It gives her the choice later down the line to either raise him as her own disciple and family, or follow in the footsteps of her own mother. Time will tell.
If Gloomy did become her apprentice, she'd give him all of the support to development powers that surpassed even her own; if not, well, he'd make an excellent Slaymate...

>>169839
She's a bit of a sloot. Long-term abuse victims tend to be, and I figured it was appropriate for her depraved nature as a necromancer. A lot of NPC necromancer in d&d tend to be sexual degenerates, with multiple references to necrophiliacs. Vampires are also obsessed with sex.

Depicting vampirism as an almost metaphor for lust has become popular in modern depictions of vampirism. It seems a little contrary to the Rosa Maledicta philosophy, as lust tends to be hedonistic, and the Maledicta philosophy seems to hold that pleasure isn't worth it; in any case, sex has no reproductive purpose for the undead. Lament was supposed to stand out from the Dread League with his horniness, and sort of the same with Mason (who is not undead at all). But eh

"Yes. We encountered him on the road that's just beyond the trees. I knew he would come that way. Posing as a pony, hoping to encounter and prey upon some hapless pony from the logging company. Morning Dew had not returned; it was just us. He acted fast. Soul Loft was thrown up into the tree. Summer Breeze shot a fireball, but he dodged..."

Going into the meadow, Posey sees the remains of what was likely at one point a farm, albeit a rather small one, that would have been an island in an ocean of forest. The farmhouse is a single floor, raised above the ground, with a wooden porch and small set of steps leading up to it, and a roof with a low angle. The roof is collapsed in part, the windows are broken, and the paint has worn off. In front of it is a field of a few acres, with tall grass and periodic seedlings and small trees sprouting up. There is a small dirt road to the left, though this too, is starting to become grown over.

There's a low mist hanging just over the grass, which reflects white in the moon light. It's a bit odd for the time of year, and its prescence makes August uncomfortable.
