Occupied Equestria - Into No Pony's Land
Anonymous

No.103001
Set six years after season 6, Occupied Equestria presents an alternative history where the Changelings have conquered half of Equestria, while a former Equestrian colony - soured to Princess Twilight's notion of harmony with all creatures because of their encounters with griffins - Invaded and took the other half. In Baltimare and the Equestrian Southeast, the magic of friendship has weakened, as Communists, Changeling infiltrators, Fascists, gangs, and corrupt creepy politicians threaten the city. This role play is based in large part upon the Equestria at War mod for Hearts of Iron 4, and uses D&d 3.5e mechanics

In the North, in Bales, Brie has just aquired a carriage with which he shall make the journey into the Changeling Occupied Zone, alongt with Spark and Onyx. In Baltimare, Dark Star recouperates from injuries sustained in a near fatal encounter with a Changeling opperative. Silver helps treat two traumatized orphans, and Iron examines ancient secrets in the Jungles

Has Iron ever heard the phrase “beating a dead horse”?

>>104693
“And the 4-6-6-4 was the locomotive they selected to use for the coal mines of the Macintosh mountains because it was the most commonly used large freight locomotive of the past 10 years, but they quickly found that the steep inclines of the mountain range made moving groups of forty or sixty cars difficult. Interestingly, they found that a smaller 2-6-4 locomotive, which at the time was used more for smaller loads or even intercity passenger service, had better traction on steep mountains. So they would string two of them together facing opposite directions and pull groups of 40 cars...” blah blah blah, he yaps on for a while

I'm guessing the second option is also a bad idea.

Iron, simply shaking his head at his two pervious ideas and knowing the seemingly insane pony is not about to comply to a threat, decides to simply search the area for Pear in case she is still here, shivering in fear for her life or something along those lines.
I'll roll Search, which has a -1 on it, sadly.

“And the largest steam locomotive ever made is the Big Colt 4-8-8-4. It is so big that it needed to pivot in the center, and it burns so much coal that two stallions shoveling couldn’t keep up, it needs an mechanical screw feeder and new water every hour. It was used mostly for moving shipments of Iron Ore from Whinnysota down to Bales and Fillydelphia....”
In case Iron was wondering, the set of two or three numbers is the normal convention to describe a steam locomotive based upon the number of wheels in each carriage. The first set is the number of wheels in the guiding carriage at the front, the second and sometimes third set is the number of wheels in the propulsion carriage pushed by the piston, and the third set is the number of wheels in the trailing carriage under the cabin. Thus a 2-6-4 has two wheels in the front, six wheels pushed by the pistons, and four under the cabin. How does Silver know that? Because White Orchid loudly explained that to him

It's not about doing or not doing it. If a literal sneeze can kill him, holding his mouth with a lot of strength will dislocate his jaw or something or the jab will cause him to bleed out even faster. Iron's brawn is not going to do much good if that happens, so I'll go for searching for Pear, who must be panting heavily and metaphorically shitting herself over perhaps being in danger again, depending on how much she witnessed.

White Orchid's speech has had a sort of... airy quality to it. Like Socrates in his Thinkery contemplating useless things, White Orchid speaks on facts about far away objects, detached from present experience. But now, White Orchid's speech is more... ethereal, as he chooses now to speak of myths, fables, and legends. He tells tales of old myths that Silver heard whispers of when he was a colt, though in those days the myths were regarded more as history than as legends....

For all history, Ponykind was limited to the speed their own legs and wings could carry them, and even then they were confined to sources of water if they wanted long distance trade. Their cities and farms clung carefully to the large rivers and the coastline, as waterlines were to Pony society as blood vessels were to an individual pony, as these alone could serve as the essential conduits of commerce. The Equestrian Interior was without form, and void. A sprawling realm of chaos, a vast wilderness ceded by civilized society to the Manticore, the Buffalo, the Dragon, the hunter, the herder, and the bango-playing hill pony.

So it was, until the age of the Titans. It is said the Titans took the form of the mundane, of the lowest members of pony society - the poor farmer of Albion, the colt of a chimney sweep in Manehattan - at least as often an Earth Pony as a Unicorn. Indeed, perhaps they were once ponies. But they became something more, something with the power to rend fire from the deep earth, the power to move entire mountains, and the power to transform Earth into Fire and Metal, and water Into Lightning. Rock Melder, Cartnieghgy, Whinny Pferd, they and others held creative powers somewhere below that of gods. They were the living embodiment of the principles of the old sage Apple Smith, and Field Marshals in Pony's conquest of Nature, in the process displacing the old aristocracy and bringing suffering upon the poor.

One Titan in particular interests White Orchid, who appeared in the form of a white maned grey earth pony stallion who earned the name Robber Barron. A pony named Horse Power invented the Steam Locomotive, but Robber Baron made the Steam Locomotive into an Instrument of his mind, body and will. One year, he wished to traverse the distance from Canterlot to Stableside. So he traveled, and leaving behind a trail of steel. It is said that wherever his Iron hooves landed, a city grew. From the wilderness on the edges of the Everfree grew Ponyville. From the Desert grew Dodge junction and Hoof City. He sat down to rest in the prairie, and along came Hoofington. But Robber Baron found he was not done, as the tumbleweeds still rolled, and the Buffalo still roamed. There is land to be conquered, he thought. So he Cantered his Iron Hooves across the West, from Las Pegasus to the old Equestrian fort at Fort Mourn, and where he stepped, civilization grew out of the dust and sand. Along came Rockville, Appaloosa, and Pinto Creek. So it was that the West was broken and tamed. In due time the land of Buffalo and Tumbleweeds became as tame and civilized as the Equestrian East and Northwest Coast. The Steel bloodlines were to Applesoosa and Dodge Junction as the Celestial Sea was to Manehattan or Fillydelphia, or the Lunar Ocean to Pransciso and Vanhoover.

That was back when Titans roamed. So go the legends, anyways.

It certainly sounds almost mythical to Silver. It seems White Orchid has made an avid listener out of the old Unicorn stallion. "Wonders of Industrial Age. And to think, I was born just few years too late to witness it in its full glory."

Blue Skies is part of the State Security Administration's Internal Security branch, essentially an oversized secret police organization, somewhere between a specialized law enforcement agency and a garrisoning army involved in counterinsurgency. While more or less para-military, it's styled more like a police agency. Blue Skies is probably one above the basic lowest rank, maybe something like a police "detective" or possibly "captain." Or perhaps "Intelligence agent," or "Field agent." In the Ordungpolize of the Nazi SS, the equivalent would be something like "Team Master," and for the NKVD it would be "Sargent of Special Service"

Understandable enough, he thinks to himself. While he hopes that Mint will get a chance to speak a little about marine life before they arrive at the orphanage, from what Silver knows about White Orchid and colts in general, he has his doubts as to that possibility.

A little, I think. You certainly try to make her seem malevolent when you describe her, but to me at least she comes out more as just narcissistic. She doesn't really mean evil in most cases, she just thinks very highly of herself and Pegasi in general.

Either way, I noticed an issue with her left eye that's bothering the hell out of me, so I may as well see if I can't correct her facial expression a little.

There’s an episode of Netflix’s “The Crown” set around 1956 or 58 that centers around Prime Minister Winston Churchill receiving a portrait of himself commissioned from a famous painter. Everyone who sees the portrait praises it for being such an accurate representation, and for the general quality of the art. Churchill, however, clearly doesn’t like it, and hides it or covers it when he can. Towards the end, a man confronts Churchill on the portrait. Churchill states that he hates the portrait because it depicts him as old, decayed, decrepit. He says “ it’s cruel” the man retorts “age is cruel!” and that settles it. At the end of the episode, Churchill is seen setting the portrait on fire his backyard. An epilogue text says that that portrait of Winston Churchill is “considered a lost masterpiece.”

And here is Skies with a more neutral expression, for you to judge accordingly.

I'm not very good with advice, much like I'm not very good with most everything, but I do have this bit of advice to offer: the characters we create are rarely the characters we end up with. I created Silver Sword years ago, back when I first "Joined the Herd", to use the old phrase, and even back then I used him for RP. Admittedly, it was fairly shitty RP between a bunch of strangers on the internet with more than an unhealthy amount of ERP involved, but you get the idea. Through those months, maybe even years I spent on that site, interacting with the other characters and the world we had managed to create, the plucky young adventurer with a sword in his telekinetic grasp and a hunger for stories of adventure changed. It wasn't necessarily a good or bad change (though I would like to imagine it was in the end for the better), and he was still Silver Sword, but he changed. Much like how he's changed during this game. The grizzled, old mercenary stallion from Severyana, years after his original adventurers, isn't quite the same pony that he is now today, thanks to the interactions with the characters you and all the other players have made and the world we've helped to craft together. And just like before, I would like to think of it as a good change, like through our interactions we have helped to make all of our characters more refined, and make them the best they could be. It's almost like we're making them more...human, as time passes.

So, I suppose what I would say to you is: don't be so worried about how the Blue Skies of now isn't quite the character you had imagined when you made her. Characters change as they interact with the world around them, just like how we change. All that matters is what you make of that change.

Over behind the fire, about to Iron's left, are two tied up ponies. They must be bandits from the earlier fight. They are sitting upright and gagged. This whole area is slightly cleared, evidently recently, alhough part of that is due to large rocks and thin soil on the terrain. Jungle foliage is nearby, perhaps a hundred meters. The fire is pretty large. The wood for it must have already been harvested and stored out of iron's line of sight, because this is a large fire to be created by a single small female in less than an hour.

"So it is" she says for the second time. Then she blinks
"It's the same you reason you chose to fight two battles without fixing those holes in your chest. They thought they were up to the task. They took a risk. But they failed. You must understand that these are university professors who spend most of their time in air-conditioned rooms. When they work in the fields, it is in carefully protected deserts in Sonambula, or inhabited villages in the mountains or the little dilapidated towns that populate the swamp of hayseed. They only need one pony with a gun, if any at all, and they are never far away from police. Hell, half the time the police provide a free escort. These ponies did not understand the world beyond their university very well. They did not understand, as I do, just how far ponies are willing to go for a few bits - even though their daily lectures include some warning or another about the greed of the noble or capitalist classes, they didn't quite understand just how universal the desire for a few bits is.

They were not stupid. They understood that there was bandit activity in this region. But the Equestrian Army combed this region just six months ago, and they believed any bandits had been dealt with by the Equestrian military. They did not realize that the bandits would survive the death of Equestria, occupying abandoned Equestrian Army camps like maggots in a corpse. They did consider a large escort of armed ponies, but they considered that to be a risk all of its own. They figured that if any armed ponies were active here, it was partisans fighting against the Fascists, or natives in their perennial revolt against the central government. They figured that having many armed ponies might be 'provocative.' It helped that this belief coincided with a desire to save money. Instead, they hired only one armed pony - our guide. And they certainly weren't going to pick up any weapons.

They hoped that a small group of university researchers would not be an appealing target to any hostile actors - too big for a simple robbery, and far too poor to justify a large scale attack. They may have been right, except that Loans got drunk in a bar in Saltmane, and bragged about a treasure. Peer Review noticed the security breech, but believed that nopony who could be a danger was listening. He was wrong.

Like you, they conceive of life as a game of dice. If you win, you get two years pay. If you lose, you die. Unlike you, they did not roll so well"

And he has many concerns about them.

Iron simply nods to the story Pear unfolded on the thought process of the group she was in.
"A mix of appearing weak and without anything to dissuade any would-be bandits... I see. Your guide, Review, knew what it was doing up until the leak that one intern, this Loans fellow, did."
He ponders his next move.
"Be honest with me. Is the money I carry really important for the history of this land or will it be used as simply shiny things to awe the employers who funded this?"

She shrugs
"Coins, because they are stamped with the images of the kings who commissioned them, can be used to tell the date of a site, or what civilizations a given culture was in trade relations with. Masks can be used to discern craftsmanship or to determine rituals. But really, most of these probably would have been put on a display in Tenochtitlan, Baltimare, or Canterlot. The university would have liked to display them on their own property rather than donating them to public museums, but who knows how that would have turned out. Maybe sold to private collectors, but that requires getting around the Antiquities Act, which can be done by some legal maneuvering."
